“The Chamber looks forward to an equal and fair treatment of all businesses across the board to ensure a conducive business environment for all and promote cordial relations based on mutual trust and benefit” the statement reads in part.

KCCC further reiterated that, by allowing them to do business in Kenya, they will contribute to Kenya’s growth and development efforts through employment creation and contribution to Kenya’s tax revenue.

“The Chamber will continue to foster collaboration between our two countries in promoting investments, trade, and Tourism between our two countries”, the Chamber said in a tweet.

Following comments made by Trade Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria on February 24, in which he indicated his intention to exclude China Square from the Unicity Mall, the business hub declared an indefinite closure on Sunday, February 26.

According to Kuria, China Square will promote foreign traders’ entry into the nation so they can seize the chances that have been left open for Kenyans.

The Anti-Counterfeit Authority (ACA) earlier on Thursday, March 2, released to the business goods worth Ksh50 million that had been seized as a result of complaints that the company had violated intellectual property laws.

China Square proprietor Lei Cheng had initially expressed concerns about his business not reopening.

In his statement announcing the hub’s closure, he claimed that since the company’s opening on January 29, 2023, the hub has been unable to manage the heavy volume of daily customer traffic.

Additionally, he noted that false claims made by customers on social media, as well as complaints about unpleasant purchasing experiences, all contributed to the company’s closure.

Lei Chang previously stated that he earned his first Ksh 20 million in his first two weeks of business, adding that on a slow business day, his sales came to Ksh 10 million.

The business has however reopened at a time when its popularity has soared within the Kenyan Market. Most Kenyans heard of China Square for the first time when it was mentioned by Trade CS, Moses Kuria.

The ongoing tussle between Hon Kuria and China Square has only increased the visibility of the hub on search engines and is a point of discussion in many forums; both online and offline. The majority of Kenyans have vowed to visit the mall as soon as possible.

Saboti Member of Parliament Hon. Caleb Amisi believes that China Square was being advertised. In a tweet, Hon. Amisi says that he is now aware of its existence and warned that it will be flocked by customers.

Hon. Amisi’s tweet has been affirmed by many Kenyans. David Mayieko expressed his concerns and suggested that the mall should put mechanisms in place that will allow it to operate 24/7 to meet the needs of all customers who will flock to the premises.

To confirm the above, The Scroll Board writer Makau Muli has noted that, China Square is fully jammed, immediately after reopening. The tweeps accredited the free marketing to CS Moses Kuria.

The observations are asserted by an online presence. The China Square, which was opened on Jan 29, 2023, struggled with online presence until when Trade Cs chipped in and boosted the analytics. The mall has continuously trended for the past week both on Twitter and google search.

According to Google data, the mall was most searched by residents from Banana Hill; Mlolongo; Gitaru; Ngenda, and Ruiru. The list further extends to other parts outside Nairobi Metropolitan.

The question of whether, the CS’s altercation with the Chinese trader was intentional marketing strategy or it is just a coincidence is a matter that can only be answered by former Chama cha Kazi’s party leader.
