Which Day is the KDF Day Observed?

The KDF Day is observed on the 14th of October of every year, the day that Kenyan Soldiers left for Somalia. This is after the country had been rocked by a number of terrorists acts that were occasioned by kidnappings especially at the coast and spates of violence in some parts of the country.

It has been observed since 2012 and here is how it was observed;

1. The KDF Day 2012

In 2012, KDF Day celebrations took place at the 10 Engineers, Nanyuki Garrison. It was led by Minister of Defence, Hon. Yusuf Haji who said, wars are won by men and not machines or gadgets just men who showed great courage in the face of adversity.

‘We have sent a loud message to the enemies of Kenya, that we are ready at all times to defend our values, our way of life, our collective will and our sovereignty in a summary’, General Karangi said in his speech.

Chief of Defense Forces General Julius Karangi unveiled a monument in honor of the fallen heroes, that is, ‘those Kenyan soldiers who lost their lives in the line of duty,’ while underscoring the forces’ commitment to protecting Kenya’s territorial integrity.

Lt. Colonel Nyaga who led the troop recalled the battle of Afmadhow and many battles that they fought.

The widows of the slain soldiers also spoke, giving an insight into what incursion means.

‘We are left alone to play the role of father and Mother’, a widow said in her speech.

Others who spoke were Brig George Owinow, Engineers Brigade Commander, and Lt. General Joseph Kasaon.

It was the day for savouring the gains made, especially the historic September 29, 2012, capture of the Al-Shabaab stronghold, Kismayu through a meticulously planned amphibious attack.

2. The KDF Day 2013

The second KDF Day was celebrated at the Laikipia Airbase. After inspecting the guard of honour, President and the first lady laid a wreath in honour of the fallen soldiers who lost their lives.
