Pep Guardiola’s team has won two trophies recently having bagged the Premier League title and the FA Cup already, after smashing Manchester United in the famous Manchester Derby that was played at Wembley. The Cityzens are now aiming at the highest title of the season to make history.

If they win Sunday’s UCL final to secure their first European title, the Cityzens will emulate their arch-rivals Manchester United’s feat from 1998-99. Manchester United, under Sir Alex Ferguson, won the EPL, FA Cup, and Champions League in the 1998-99 season. To date, it is the only instance of any team in English football winning the treble.

A victory in the UCL final will also make Pep Guardiola, the manager of Manchester City, only the second coach after Carlo Ancelotti (four) to have won three or more UCL trophies. With Barcelona, the Spanish manager captured two UEFA Champions League championships (2008–09 and 2010–11).

Manchester City defeated European powerhouse Bayern Munich in the quarterfinals to go to the final, and then the UCL champions from the previous season, Real Madrid, were defeated in the last four to set up the matchup with Inter Milan.

As for Inter, they finished third in Serie A to guarantee their return to this competition the following season and defeated Fiorentina in the Coppa Italia final to win their first trophy of the year.

The Simone Inzaghi team had a much easier route to the final compared to their English opponents. Inter Milan beat Porto in their round of 16 clash before eliminating Benfica and city rivals AC Milan in the quarter-finals and semi-finals, respectively.

Inter Milan head to Istanbul on the back of their Italian Supercup and Italian Cup triumphs under Simone Inzaghi.

All eyes will be on whether manager Simone Inzaghi chooses to start on-loan Chelsea forward Romelu Lukaku or former City striker Edin Dzeko, while City is hopeful Kyle Walker recovers to full fitness.

Appearance at the UEFA Champions League

Manchester City have featured in the Champions League 12 times, and in every season since 2011/12, but they’ve never yet won the competition. Their maiden European Cup entry after being crowned First Division champions in 1968 culminated in a round of 32 exits at the hands of Fenerbahce.

For Manchester City, this will be their second UEFA Champions League final in three years after falling short in the 2020-21 title clash against Chelsea.

Meanwhile, Inter Milan, who have won the UEFA Champions League trophy thrice (1963-64, 1965, 2009-10) are chasing their fourth title, having last won the European crown under Jose Mourinho in 2009-10.

What is the team news?

Kyle Walker’s final preparations have been delayed by a muscular injury, but he has pledged to recover, so he should be included in the team barring any last-minute setbacks. Pep Guardiola doesn’t have to concern himself with any additional injury concerns.

Milan Skriniar has returned to training for Inter Milan following an injury, but it’s unlikely that he will gain a spot in the starting back three given Simone Inzaghi’s already-established plans. Both Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Joaquin Correa are hoping to be cleared to play in the championship game, with Correa having the least chance after suffering an injury in the Coppa Italia final.

Predicted lineups

Mancester City – Ederson, Akanji, Dias, Ake, Stones, Rodri, Silva, De Bruyne, Gundogan, Grealish, Haaland

Inter Milan– Onana, Darmian, Acerbi, Bastoni, Dumfries, Calhanoglu, Brozovic, Barella, Dimarco, Martinez, Dzeko
