The Great Pyramid of Giza is the largest pyramid of the Fourth Dynasty pharaoh Khufu. It was built in the early 26th century B.C. for a period of around 27 years.
The Great Pyramid of Giza is the oldest of the seven wonders of the ancient world, and the only one to remain largely intact. It is the most famous monument of the Giza Pyramid Complex, in the Pyramid Fields of Memphis, and its Necropolis UNESCO world heritage site, in Giza Egypt.
Construction of The Great Pyramid of Giza.
The pyramids of Egypt are tombs of early Egyptian kings. The transition from the step pyramid to a true, smooth-sided pyramid took place during the reign of King Snefru, founder of the Fourth Dynasty (2880-2560 B.C.E).
The largest and most famous of them all, The Great Pyramid of Giza, was built by Snefru’s son, Khufu, also known as Cheops, the later Greek form of his name. The pyramid’s base covered over 13 acres and its side rose at an angle of 51 degrees 52 mobile and over 755 feet long. It originally stood over 481 feet high.
Today, it’s 450 feet high. Scientists estimate that its stone block is two tons a piece and the largest weighing as much as fifteen tons each. Two other major pyramids were built at Giza, for Khufu’s son, King Khafre(chefren), and a successor of Khafre, Mankaure(Mycerious). Also located at Giza is the famous Sphinx, a massive statue of life with a human head, carved during the time of Khafre.
Who worked on the construction of The Great Pyramid of Giza?
The pyramids were constructed by tens of thousands of workers and laborers, not slaves as it was once believed. Experts hold that there was a workforce of roughly 20,000 to 40,000 during peak seasons. Worker graffiti shows that they were divided into groups of 40 men and then divided into a team of 10.
Today, you can still visit the remnants of the workers’ village where they lived during the construction of the Pyramids. There’s also evidence that the village was home to support personnel such as bakers, physicians, priests, and more.
