Fort Jesus is one of the most preserved and well-maintained military fortifications in Mombasa. The fort was built by the Portuguese in the 16th century to the designs of Giovanni Battista to protect the port of Mombasa. It exemplifies a new type of fortification that resulted from innovations in military weapons that occurred between the 15th and 16th centuries. Fort Jesus was built by the Portuguese in the 16th century over a spur of coral near Old Town Mombasa. Mombasa was a place for trade and also a gate away to India making it suitable for the Portuguese. The fort was built to secure the safety of the Portuguese and the port of Mombasa. The fort also served as a hub of trade, a jail, and a military outpost. The fort was subject to battle and therefore it was owned by different people including the Swahili, Omani Arabs, and the British.

The fort however has been captured and recaptured severally making it full of different architecture proving the existence of different cultures and people. It is built in the shape of a human being when checked from above. It has since remained to be a tourist destination, a conservation lab, and has hosted many research programs. Walking down the passage is like traveling back in time because it is dark and ominous.

The museum has a collection of armor, weapons, clothes, cereals, jewelry, materials, and anything that was used by the different people who captured the fort.
