There are Governors Who Died in office. The Constitution of Kenya 2010 created the office of the Governor. The County Governor is the chief executive of the county government in Kenya. Thus, the major role of a County Governor in Kenya is being the head of the county government, which is the second level of government. The other level of government is the national government. However, there are some governors who died in office and were unable to complete their term.
If a vacancy occurs in the office of county governor, the deputy county governor shall assume office as county governor for the remainder of the term of the county governor.

Under Kenyan law, in the event of the death of a sitting governor, the deputy governor takes over the office for the rest of the term. Nyeri county has had the misfortune of losing two sitting governors; Nderitiu Gachagua and Dr. Wahome Gakuru. Other County bosses who died in the office are:
1. Hon. Nderitu Gachagua, Nyeri County (24 Feb 2017)
Nyeri Governor Nderitu Gachagua is first on the list of Governors Who Died in office. He died aged 64 while receiving treatment at Royal Marsden Hospital in London. Nderitu Gachagua previously served as the MP for the Mathira constituency before becoming Governor. He had been ailing for a long time and was undergoing treatment in London.
His deputy governor Samuel Wamathai took over the office for the rest of the term. In the 2017 general elections, Wamathai lost to Wahome Gakuru.

2. Patrick Wahome Gakuru, Nyeri County (7 November 2017)
The second on the list of Governors Who Died in office is Patrick Wahome Gakuru. He served as the third governor of Nyeri County having been elected in August 2017 on a Jubilee party ticket alongside deputy governor, Mutahi Kahiga.
After a two-month stay in office, on November 7, 2017, Gakuru died after a grisly road accident at Kabati, along the Thika-Murang’a road while heading to Nairobi for a talk show. He was aged 51.
His Deputy, Mutahi Kahiga took over and won re-election in 2022.
3. Joyce Laboso, Bomet (29 July 2019)
Joyce Cherono Abonyo served as the second governor of Bomet County from 2017 until her death on 29 July 2019. She was a Member of Parliament representing the Sotik constituency before she was elected to the gubernatorial seat.
Laboso died of cancer at the Nairobi Hospital and upon her death, her remains were interred at her matrimonial home. She is third on the list of governors who died in office.
Bomet deputy governor, Dr. Hillary Barchok was sworn in as governor. Dr. Barchok was re-elected in 2022.

4. John Obiero Nyagarama, Nyamira County ( 18 Dec 2020)
John Obiero Nyagarama was the first Governor of Nyamira County, deputized by Amos Nyaribo. He was a member of the Orange Democratic Movement and was elected in March 2013, subsequently retaining his seat for a second term beginning in August 2017.
On 15 December 2020, he was placed on life support at The Nairobi Hospital after testing positive for COVID-19 during the COVID-19 pandemic in Kenya and suffering multiple lung failures. Three days later, he died from the virus. He was aged 74 becoming fourth on the list of governors who died in office.
He was succeeded by the deputy governor, Amos Nyaribo
