Amid a probe into Shakahola cultic operations, police officers have arrested the wife of self-proclaimed preacher Paul Mackenzie, Rhoda Mumbua Maweu, who had been in a hideout in Mtwapa alongside her aunt, on Monday, May 1 night.
A security officer who’s part of the investigation team confirmed that Mumbua has been identified as a key figure within the church’s operations.
Rhoda Maweu is expected to be arraigned in court, on Tuesday, May 2, together with her spouse Paul Mackenzie and cultic counterpart Ezekiel Odero.

Paul Mackenzie’s wife is a key witness
Paul Mackenzie’s wife is set to be treated as a witness in the case, having been involved in the day-to-day church operations in Shakahola.
Her name surfaced after a comprehensive analysis of Mackenzie’s phone records and interrogation suspects, prompting detectives to list her as a person of interest.
Paul Mackenzie, who managed to keep his private life reclusive from the limelight, married Mumbua after the death of his second wife in 2017.

Mackenzie’s church, based in Kilifi County, has been under police scrutiny for the past several months. This followed after he allegedly starved members of his congregation to death. The self-postured religious leader has been accused of manipulating his followers through his ill-fated teachings.
Postmortem of the over 100 bodies exhumed from his Shakahola farm resumed on Monday, May 1. The exercise that is being led by government pathologist Johansen Oduor at Malindi Sub-county Hospital. The autopsy is carried out in order to ascertain if there are body organs missing in the bodies exhumed from Shakahola.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki confirmed that search and recovery operations are still ongoing in the Shakahola forest in order to retrieve the survivors. He also said that aerial surveillance was deployed to complement grand troops, so as to ease the operation.
President William Ruto, speaking on the same note, reaffirmed that the government is going to form a Judicial Commission of Inquiry in order to make sure that what happened in Shakahola never repeats again.
