As the nation joined the entire world in commemoration of World Press Freedom Day, on May 3rd, 2023, Interior CS Kindiki has called on media owners to give journalists a better salary.
Professor Kindiki said it’s senseless for members of the public to expect independent media and transparent highlights on issues affecting society when at the same time, journalists go for months without pay, making it difficult for them to even sustain themselves.

Just as was the message the other day on International Labour Day, it is pretentious of us to expect independent media and unbiased information from reporters when journalists go for months without pay and others cannot sustain themselves because the pay is too little.”
Kindiki remarked.
The Interior Cabinet Secretary has urged media owners to pay media personalities in respect to the work they have delivered in a day.
There must be an equal pay for an equal day.”
The CS insisted.
Speaking on the same note, he also said that he firmly believes in an open society and trusts in the representation of media in the openness of the nation’s democracy.
We firmly believe in an open society and the media represents this openness in our democracy.”
Kindiki reiterated.

CS Kindiki assures Journalists Full Support
The CS also made an assurance that his ministry will continue providing security and protection to journalists while on duty. In this regard, he stated that anyone offering threats to the safety of reporters while in their line of work will not escape unpunished.
We will continue protecting journalists to do their job – online and offline and punish those who threaten the safety of reporters in their line of work.”
He affirmed.
The Interior CS made his remarks amid celebrations around the world in commemoration of World Press Freedom Day, a day the world marks the 30th anniversary of the date.
The theme of 2023 is; “Shaping a future of rights, freedom of expression as a driver for all other rights.”
This day, as documented by the United Nations, under UNESCO, the world pulls together in defense of a free press. This is achieved through raising awareness about the values of press freedom, the necessity of defending journalists, and the need to support independent and free media.
World Press Freedom Day is also significant for the remembrance of journalists who have lost their lives while in the line of duty.
