The Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary General Francis Atwoli, on Saturday, April 29, spoke about former president Uhuru Kenyatta’s involvement in active politics.
Francis Atwoli made the announcement while speaking during COTU’s annual shop. He cited that if Uhuru Kenyatta wanted to be a peacemaker internationally, he should start with his own home. He also said that peace is very important in a country and as a peacemaker, Uhuru should stop taking political sides.
I cannot be a mediator between Raila Odinga and President William Ruto. That should be the work of a retired president. If Uhuru wants to be a peacemaker internationally, he should start with his own home. Peace is very important in the country and that should be Uhuru’s priority, not taking sides in politics. I warned that Uhuru would cause many problems once he retires. I said he has a lot of money and cannot just sit around. We should get to a point and squeeze this constitution and say once he has served for 10 years, he should become a peacemaker. That should be advocated for in the Constitution.”
Atwoli said.
Francis Atwoli calls for amendment of Law to Contain Former Presidents
The COTU Secretary General also mentioned that there should be constitutional amendments in order to contain retired presidents from involving themselves in active politics.
We need to amend the Constitution to ensure that a retired president stays retired and not actively involving themselves in politics. Once someone retires, they automatically take up the role of a peacemaker in the country.”
Atwoli added.
Since he stepped down as the head of state, Uhuru Kenyatta has transversed across the continent permanently, leading several peacemaking campaigns across Africa.
His most recent one was in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where he led efforts to end the fights between rebels and government forces in the country’s recent past.

However, Atwoli also mentioned that the planned demonstrations challenging President William Ruto’s sit-in power will not yield any fruits. But instead, what they need to do as leaders is to sit down and talk since the fall of the government will also mean the entire nation’s downfall.
There are situations that are irreversible. Even if you demonstrate challenging Ruto’s presidency, he will not step down. We are all in a financial crisis. What we need to do is sit and talk because if this government falls, we will all fall with it.”
He added.
The former President’s involvement in active politics has been evident in recent days when he visited the Jubilee party headquarters and went on to confront the protesters on Wednesday, April 20.
Anyone who wants to leave a party can join another. We have no quarrel with anyone. We want to guard our party, and those who do not want, are free to leave.
Let us maintain peace. Police officers have better things to do other than coming here to restore peace. We don’t have issues with anyone, our mandate is to maintain peace.”
Uhuru Kenyatta remarked.
On Saturday, April 29, Uhuru called for a National Delegation Conference (NDC) at the Bomas of Kenya to chart the way forward for the party.
