On Sunday afternoon in London streets, Kelvin Kiptum, 23 years old, collected a gold medal for Kenya in the London Marathon event.
Kelvin Kiptum won the London Marathon after running in a time of 2:01:25. He is now the 2nd fastest marathoner ever after Eliud Kipchoge.
Kelvin Kiptum expressed his joy after winning the London Marathon for the second-fastest time in history.
“I am so happy with the results,” he told the BBC. “I don’t know what to say right now. I am just grateful.”
“The course felt good, there was a bit of rain around halfway but it was ok. l enjoyed doing the marathons, it is good preparation for me. I love it, I am very happy.”
Kiptum almost set a new record
Kiptum just missed the world record by 18 seconds which was set by Eliud Kipchoge. He will now collect prize money of twenty-seven million Kenya shillings.
Another Kenyan athlete, Geoffrey Kamworor won a silver medal after he clinched the second position after running in a time of 2:04:23.
Tamirah Tola from Ethiopia finished in the third position and collected a bronze medal.
In the women’s elite race, Dutch Sifan Hassan was declared the winner and collected a gold medal after running in a time of 2:18:33. She has now won the marathon for the second time.
Alema Megertu finished in the second position while Peres Jepchirchir from Kenya collected a bronze after she clinched the third position. Other Kenyans, Sheila Chekirui and Judith Jeptum Korir took positions 4 and 6 respectively.

In what was probably the last race of a glittering career, Mo Farah, the four-time Olympic champion lost touch with the leaders early on with fellow Briton Emile Cairess moving up to the ninth position.
Men’s elite wheelchair event, Marcel Hug claimed his third consecutive win in the race in a course record just six days after his victory in Bostons.
There was another course record in the women’s race as Madison de Razaro from Australia claimed her second victory, five years after her first, out-sprinting reigning champion Manuela Schaer.
The president of Kenya, Dr. William Samoi Ruto congratulated all Kenyan athletes who won the London Marathon and those who participated in the event.

The first Lady Mama Rachel Ruto congratulated Kiptum for the amazing achievements he had done. She also congratulated Geoffrey Kamworor and Peres Jepchirchir at the 2023 London Marathon.
