Maasai Mara national reserve is one of the most famous and visited national reserves in Africa. Maasai Mara ecosystem has been classified among the “Seven Wonders of the World”. Maasai Mara national reserve is located in the Southern part of Kenya along the Rift Valley in Narok County. The reserve is found 224 kilometers away from the capital city of Kenya, Nairobi. It is found a few Kilometers away from Narok town. It is named in honor of the Maasai people who inhabit the area and once migrated from the Nile Basin and the Mara River that flows through it.
The Maasai believe that they are the custodians of the world’s castle which was created for them by Enkai that is God, in Maa language. The name Mara in the local language means looked from afar. The park borders Serengeti National Reserve which is one of the most famous National reserves in Tanzania. Mara national reserve and Serengeti National Park are one of Africa’s largest ecosystem that is the Mara-Serengeti ecosystems which cover an area of25, 000 square kilometers. The climate is semi-arid and a diversified vegetation which includes Acacia woodland, grassland, riverine forest, and thickets.

It is also known for the annual Great Migration welcoming 1.5 million wildebeests into the Savannah each July to October. - Lemek Conservancy- it is located within the Maasai Mara national reserve. It is home to some wild animals like lions and their cubs. It was established to ensure the sustainable use and promotion of natural and cultural resources in the area and is managed by locals. It is a beautiful place to explore and have a great experience.
- Ol Kinyei Concervacy-it is a community-led conservancy in the Mara ecosystem.it is led by the Maa community who have dedicated themselves to preserving the natural environment and promoting sustainable tourism. It is well known for its beautiful landscapes, diverse wildlife, and authentic cultural experiences.
- Mara North Conservancy- this is a private wildlife conservancy in the Masai Mara ecosystems covering an area of 30,000 hectares. It was established to promote wildlife conservation and community development through sustainable tourism. The Conservancy offers a more exclusive and intimate safari experience with limited camps and lodges and visitors have an opportunity to see a wide variety of wildlife including the big 5. Community-based conservation initiatives and partnerships with local communities are also a key focus of the conservancy.
- Musiara Swamp- is a wildlife hotspot located in the Maasai Mara National Reserve. It is home to a wide variety of wildlife including elephants and is a popular destination for game drives and nature walks.
- Mara Triangle- it is known for its breathtaking scenery, abundant wildlife, and high-quality safari experience. It is renowned for its large populations of predators and herbivorous.
- Olare Orok Conservancy- it covers an area of approximately 20,000 hectares and is known for its diverse wildlife population, including lions, elephants, cheetahs, and more. It is home to several exclusive camps and lodges that offer high-quality safari experiences and promote sustainable tourism and community development.
- Eluai Plain- covers an area of approximately 30,000 hectares. It is home to a variety of wildlife including zebras and gazelles.it is also of cultural significance to the Maasai people, who graze their livestock on the plain. However, it is facing threats such as habitat loss and degradation due to human activities including grazing and settlement.
- Beats of Beads- this is a nonprofit trust that was created by two women aiming to empower women who live near the gate of Mara National Reserve by providing opportunities using traditional crafts. An art center was built that provides the women’s needs mainly a beads museum, cafeteria, sales and marketing platform, and working shades for Maasai women artists.
- Ol Pejeta Swamp- this is a wildlife reserve covering an area of 360 square kilometers. It is home to the Big 5 game animals and endangered species such as Grevy zebras, reticulated giraffes, and African wild dogs. It also has a chimpanzee sanctuary and offers a variety of activities for visitors while promoting sustainable tourism and community development.
