Mukami Kimathi, an independence heroine who is also the widow of renowned freedom fighter Field Marshall Dedan Kimathi has been given final respect. The Mau Mau veteran died last week on Thursday from a short illness.
The final send-off kicked off with the public given an opportunity to view Mama Mukami Kimathi’s body at the Lee Funeral Home from 6 a.m. to 7 a.m. As directed by the Interior Principal of Security Raymond Omollo, the body viewing exercise will be followed by her burial at her rural home in Njabini, Nyandarua county, on the same day.
Thereafter, the cortege will leave for the burial a ceremony which will be held on the same day at her rural home in Njabini, Nyandarua County as per the family wishes.” Omollo said in a statement.

Several political leaders including President William Ruto, Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, Trade CS Moses Kuria, and Nyandarua governor Kiarie Badilisha, were among those present for the burial of the independence icon.
Close relatives of Mukami Kimathi paid heartwarming tributes during her burial service. Her daughter Miriam Nyawira talked of how her mother emphasized the importance of people living in peace and how she insisted on the importance of praying for the nation.

Her grandson Dedan Kimathi Wachuiri recalled his relationship with his grandmother, and how she even managed to put on a smile despite being sick.
Grandma has been our beacon in the family always smiling even when she was sick. As a family, we always felt like we could honor her more. Words are not enough to describe every experience we enjoyed with her.” said Wachiuri
Her daughter-in-law Nancy Nyokabi eulogized her as a great hero to many and a good example to widows.
She went through all odds to keep Kimathi’s legacy. She was dedicated to her faith and she could not miss any opportunity to share her testimonies. Mum always follows the current affairs of the country. You loved all of us like we were your own biological children.” Added Nyokabi.
